I've had some recent conversations with parents of college students, and I've heard something really disturbing that is still weighing on my mind. That's my sign we need to talk about it here.
One parent said to me that they feel like their student's academic advisor is no help and almost seems like they're trying to keep the kid in school forever!
What?!
I thought that college was supposed to be a time to learn about who you are, what you want to contribute to the greater good and figure out where to go after graduation to do it! At least, that's the lie the university system fed to ME back in the late 1900s (yeah, I'm claiming and embracing my age, why not?).
Is it just me, or is it SUPER obvious these days that colleges' main priorities are revenue generation? Especially post-pandemic, when we're seeing tuition continue to rise even for students who may NEVER set foot on a campus due to the growth in virtual learning opportunities (or sometimes even requirements)!
Your student needs more than their college counselor or academic advisor to set themselves up for a fulfilling future. I'm not trying to throw them under the bus, because there ARE some fantastic ones out there— I’ve met them! However, they can also be biased for a lot of different reasons.
Pressure to deliver on enrollment rates to provide university funding.
A schools' reputation when it comes to grades may lead advisors to recommend students repeat classes if their grades weren't up to expected standards.
Increasing student mental health needs may be causing the counselors and advisors to feel overburdened (and probably underpaid).
I'm sure there are a hundred other factors at play, too. And there are definitely some wonderful student support resources available, but they can only do so much.
If you're with me and are more than a little annoyed by how higher education seems to be putting their bottom line over our kids' success in life, let's continue conversation. Use the comment section, or send me a message at sara@saradeacon.com.
A neutral, 3rd party perspective is SOOOO important when it comes to making sense of all the pressures from school, work, family, friends, social media and what all of those sources seem to say is best. Let's work together to figure out the best path for YOU and YOUR student!
